Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere to anyone. If it does, the casualty needs help fast. CPR must start within two minutes to keep blood moving around the body. A defibrillator must be used to shock the heart back into the right rhythm within ten minutes. Without a defibrillator, there’s no way of saving someone in cardiac arrest, and with an average paramedic response time of 8 minutes and 25 seconds, having a defibrillator nearby for anyone to use is a life-saving measure.

If you’re a business owner, you’ll need first aid supplies by law, but precisely what you need depends on the nature of your business. Take our free assessment to get a straightforward list tailored to you.
Some laws may apply to you that require the installation of a defibrillator. If you own a business or are an employer, check whether you are required to provide one under these laws.
The regulations require employers to provide "adequate and appropriate" first aid equipment, facilities, and personnel. Although defibrillators are not explicitly mandated, they do require employers to assess workplace risks and implement measures to mitigate them, which can include installing defibrillators in higher-risk environments.
The regulations require employers to conduct risk assessments to determine appropriate first aid measures. If the risk of cardiac arrest is deemed significant due to factors such as age demographics, physical exertion, or remote locations, employers should include defibrillators in their first aid provisions.
Your risk assessment will ultimately determine whether you need one. Take our free assessment to find out if you should have a defibrillator at work:

In the future, certain businesses could need defibrillators by law regardless of their risk assessments. Individuals and organisations constantly work to pass legislation requiring companies to install defibrillators to fortify the country’s overall preparedness for cardiac arrest. For example, the Automated External Defibrillators (Public Access) Bill proposed legislation to make it a legal requirement to install automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in all public places across the UK.
Cardiac arrest won’t wait for bills like this to be recognised by parliament. If you run one of these businesses, don’t wait either.
The Circuit is a centralised registry of defibrillators across the UK. It connects defibrillators to emergency services to provide faster access in an emergency. When someone calls 999 and reports a cardiac arrest or a collapse without a heartbeat, the call handler uses The Circuit to locate the closest defibrillator to the site of the emergency, directs the call handler to it, and provides them with the access code if it’s in a locked cabinet.
Without The Circuit, finding the closest AED might take longer, reducing the casualty’s chance of survival. Business owners, event organisers, and community leaders should register their defibrillators on The Circuit to ensure emergency services know the location of the nearest device in the event of a cardiac arrest.

Who will most likely use your defibrillator? And what type of people is it most likely to help? These will affect which equipment you buy. Ensure you get the right equipment for wherever your defibrillator will be used.
Your risk assessment will determine which type of defibrillator you need. If there are no children present in your workplace, for example, you likely only need to worry about adult equipment. If you run a school, you almost certainly need paediatric equipment.Â
In order to optimise preparedness, you should be ready to defibrillate an adult or child casualty; thankfully, most devices have this capability.
Ensure the batteries and electrodes are compatible with your device. Otherwise, you won't be able to use your AED. Use this quick guide to check compatibility:

Educating yourself and your team on what to do when someone collapses is vital. When cardiac arrest happens, you have to act quickly, starting CPR in two minutes and using an AED in ten minutes maximum. Training and educating people means they’ll have the skills and the confidence to act immediately.
Installing a defibrillator is quick and easy; you can move on with business and all but forget about it. However, when a life-or-death emergency strikes, you’ll be thankful you made that choice. We stock AEDs from trusted international brands specialising in advanced life support and cardiac monitoring.Â
These devices are made specifically for lay responders: everyday people who might never have given first aid. They’re built with clear visual instructions and audio prompts. They help you at every step and take over by searching for a shockable rhythm, instructing the user to stand clear if there needs to be a shock. They provide instructions on when to give CPR and even save data to give paramedics a detailed handover when they arrive.

At just 490g, it’s one of the smallest and lightest AEDs available, small enough to fit in a pocket. Despite its compact size, it offers full AED functionality, including paediatric mode and Multipulse Biowave® technology, ensuring effective and safe shocks with minimal energy.
The batteries we sell have up to five-year lifespans and long guarantees on effectiveness, but the chance of a battery not working is never zero. The last thing you want is a situation where you have your defibrillator ready to go but when you switch it on at the critical moment—nothing. Don’t let a dud battery get in the way of saving a life.
That’s why we always recommend having a backup battery ready if you need a replacement when an emergency strikes. Some of our batteries have technology built in to conduct self-tests daily to ensure they’re always prepared for use.

Electrodes are single-use, meaning they won't be effective if you try to use them a second time, so keeping a few replacements on-site is important. We recommend having replacements ready at all times in case you run into some that don’t work, need to reapply during the emergency, or need to replace used ones after an event. Don’t allow your defibrillator to go without pads while you wait for new ones to be delivered—you never know when cardiac arrest could happen.
Some devices require different pads depending on whether the casualty is an adult or child. Check your device carefully to see if this is the case, and make sure you’ve got the correct pads for both eventualities.

Your defibrillator needs to stay in good condition and be protected from damage so it’s always ready to use. This isn’t as easy as keeping it safely tucked away—it needs to be installed out in the open where people can see it and access it quickly under duress.
If your defibrillator needs to be outside, it must be protected from the elements, as water and temperatures will affect its performance. It also needs to be safe from tampering or theft. Find cabinets here with locks that protect devices from wind, rain, and temperature extremes. You can also find carry cases for defibrillators that need to be taken on the move often.

Whether you need a comprehensive AED starter Kit, resus & CPR tools, or items for accessibility, having the right equipment on hand can make all the difference in an emergency. Each of these items plays a critical role in supporting swift and effective response.
Find everything you need to enhance your AED setup and be fully prepared for any challenge.
Stock up on resusciades and store them with your defibrillator. A resusciade creates a physical barrier between the casualty and the person giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while still allowing the crucial breaths to pass through. Resusciades protect people from the transmission of germs and bacteria and make them less hesitant to deliver CPR.
Be prepared to help the casualty in any state. You will need to remove clothing—cutting it off if necessary—and make sure the skin is clean and dry for proper adhesion of the electrodes. If the casualty is in contact with any water, the shock could be fatal, so make sure to dry everything off, especially if you’ve moved them out of a puddle. If the casualty has dense chest hair and you cannot fully adhere the electrodes to the skin, it will need to be shaved off. Carry out CPR using a face shield to protect yourself and the casualty from any transmissible germs.
To make this easier, you could simply order an AED Starter Kit for Defibrillation.

Keep a starter kit with your AED to help whoever needs to use it.
Ensure your defibrillator is always easy to access safely, Consider installing a fire extinguisher nearby. Keeping snap light sticks in your cabinet provides an extra, on-demand light source if main lighting isn’t working or the casualty is in a low light area.
