A surface with 1,000,000 bacteria, treated with a product that kills 99.0% of bacteria, would still have 1000 bacteria remaining on it after treatment. However, if the surface were treated with a product that kills 99.999% of bacteria, only 10 would remain. That could mean the difference between contracting a serious infection or not.
If there are:
bacteria on your hands
and you use the following hand sanitisers that are...
99% effective against germs
(Generic Hand Sanitiser)
99.9% effective against germs
(Guest Medical)
99.999% effective against germs
(Stero-San Hand Sanitiser)
then there will be...
10,000 bacteria left after use
1,000 bacteria left after use
10 bacteria left after use
The recommended concentration of alcohol in hand sanitisers is a minimum of 60%. This is because alcohol destroys disease-causing pathogens by breaking apart proteins, splitting them into pieces, or disrupting a cell's metabolism.
The main ingredient in many hand sanitisers is alcohol, combined with emollients and water. These added elements moisturise the skin and improve the penetration of the active ingredient.
Both our Sterosan Hand Sanitiser and Guest Medical Hand Sanitiser contain 70% ethanol, so they are highly effective at disinfecting hands against harmful germs and pathogens. Added emolients and skin-friendly ingredients keep hands moisturised and protected throughout regular use.
The industry standard for when hand sanitisers expire is typically 2–3 years. This indicates the amount of time that the active ingredients in the product have been deemed to be effective after testing.
Although using expired hand sanitiser gel is not dangerous, we don’t recommend it as it is likely to be less effective than in-date hand gel. The high alcohol content in the product is likely to evaporate over time, making the percentage of the active ingredient drop below the minimum of 60% the product needs to contain to be effective, reducing its efficacy against bacteria and viruses. Always check the expiry date on hand sanitiser bottles that may have been in your bag for a while.
Alcohol-based hand sanitisers kill many types of viruses by dissolving their fat membranes and killing bacterial spores. An enveloped virus consists of viral genetic material coated in a lipid (fatty) layer. Alcohol-based hand sanitisers inactivate the virus by breaking down the lipid layer.
Using a good-quality hand sanitiser is the only way to guarantee protection against germs and viruses that live on our hands. Although you may be tempted by cheaper alternatives, the low price comes at a high cost to your health and protection against germs.
At Steroplast Healthcare, we care about what goes into our products and provide our customers with only the highest quality, tried, and tested products that meet British Standards. Our hand sanitiser formulas contain 70% alcohol moisturisers and emollients to provide special skin protection.
Even with regular use, our products will ensure that the skin barrier is protected and hydrated, further reducing the risk of infection. Emollients are added to our hand sanitiser formulations to soften the skin with a proactive film that traps moisture — they are often used in products to manage skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
