Understanding the risks of hypothermia and how to prevent it in an emergency

Hypothermia is a serious and potentially life-threatening medical condition where your body temperature drops dangerously low, below 35°C. It must be treated quickly, as it can rapidly begin to affect blood flow and organ function. Symptoms of hypothermia include:

Cold skin
Shivering
Confusion
Slurred speech
Tiredness and fatigue

Tiredness and fatigue

The best preventative measure for hypothermia in an emergency situation is to wrap the patient in warm emergency blankets like the ones listed above, aiming to warm them back up slowly. Try to keep them out of the rain and wind where possible. Monitor them closely and keep them talking and engaged.

Many of our first aid kits contain individually wrapped foil blankets, which protect the wearer from outside elements while retaining their own body heat, helping to prevent their body temperature from dropping too low.

If you have any concerns that someone you're treating is suffering from hypothermia, keep them warm and seek professional medical attention immediately.
