Developed from lessons highlighted by events like the tragic Manchester Arena bombing, this advanced triage system addresses the urgent need for quicker medical intervention in emergencies. The 'care gap', the vital time between an injury occurring and the onset of effective treatment, can be pivotal. It’s been specifically designed for use by security personnel, first aiders, and emergency service workers, including police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and terror response units to use in emergency settings, managing which casualties require urgent attention first.

Understand Martyn’s Law and minimising the care gap with the right tools

In response to the tragic events at the Manchester Arena in 2017, the UK is preparing to introduce Martyn’s Law. This legislation, named to honour Martyn Hett and the 21 other lives lost, is aimed at strengthening security and emergency response measures in public venues across the United Kingdom.

Martyn’s Law, also referred to as the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, distinguishes between 'standard tier' venues with a capacity of 100-799 and 'enhanced tier' venues with a capacity of 800 or above, setting out different security, safety and preparedness guidelines for each.

Minimising the ‘care gap’ is the central aim or commitment of Martyn’s Law. The ‘care gap’ refers to the critical period of time before professional emergency response services can arrive on a scene to provide treatment to casualties who have fallen victim to an incident.

Martyn’s Law will require certain businesses, venues and publicly accessible locations to implement and manage increased safety measures. These measures include risk assessments, providing training, and installing additional safety equipment. Additional equipment may include kits such as the Public Access Trauma (PAcT) First Aid Kit and, in some cases, triage management systems like the Smart Triage™ First Response Kit to empower untrained members of the public to respond and provide assistance in the event of a terror attack, effectively narrowing the gap between an incident occurring and professional help arriving.

These kits serve as vital components in a venue’s emergency preparedness strategy, ensuring they meet Martyn’s Law requirements and beyond. Choosing to integrate these kits into your venue’s safety measures is about more than compliance. It’s a proactive step towards enhancing public safety and reassurance in spaces where people gather.

As we adapt to the requirements of Martyn’s Law, it’s important to view these measures as part of a broader strategy to safeguard our public spaces. At Steroplast, we understand the importance of being ready and resilient, providing tools that empower emergency responders, business owners and members of the public to act decisively in critical moments. It's about creating safer, more secure environments where everyone is protected.
