Medical Uses for Cotton Wool in First Aid
Cotton wood is commonplace first aid item, used throughout medical care for a range of purposes due to its versatility and high absorbency.

Cotton Buds
Due to their fine tip and fine handle, cotton buds are the ideal tool for precise wound cleaning, clearing dirt or debris from around a wound area. They are also ideal for applying small amounts of wound wash, ointment or cream carefully and delicately to sensitive areas.
Cotton Wool Roll
Due to it’s shape, length and absorbency, cotton wool roll is very effective at soaking up excess fluid from a heavily exuding wound. However, as with cotton wool balls, the density of the roll makes it unsuitable for cleaning open wounds as it may leave debris on the wound site, risking infection and slowing the healing process.
Cotton Wool Balls
Cotton wool balls are highly absorbent and malleable, making them ideal from applying cleaning solutions such as disinfectant or ointments to skin that needs to be cleaned before treatment.
Due to the risk of linting, we do not recommend using cotton wool balls for directly cleaning a wound area as parts of the cotton wool may stick to the wound bed and risk infection, slowing recovery.
Cotton Nasal Plugs
Ergonomically designed to fit comfortably inside the nostrils and expand as they absorb fluid, cotton nasal plugs are the ideal solution for nose bleeds, absorbing fluid and helping to manage blood flow.
Be careful not to push the plugs up too far, and never push one inside a patient’s ear.
Cotton Gauze Swabs
Though not listed as a sundry item, cotton gauze swabs are an essential medical item used throughout first aid and medical care so are included here. Gauze swabs are non-woven, non-medicated and non-fraying sterile pads designed for wound cleaning and protection.
Their high absorbency draws moisture away from the wound, and swabs can be used to clean the wound with ointments, or left over the wound under a dressing to keep it moist while it heals. Our Steroswab gauze swabs have been developed so they do not stick to the wound, improving patient comfort and making removal easier.
