People don’t know that there is a difference between antibacterial cleaning products and disinfectants. In many cases, disinfectants kill bacteria as well as other harmful pathogens and viruses, and so can be classed as antibacterial.
However, you should be aware of some subtle differences between a disinfectant and an antibacterial product that affect how to use them safely and effectively.
Disinfectants | Antibacterials |
Designed to be highly effective at removing the vast majority of germ types. Applied “dwell time” on targeted surfaces generally requires a minimum of 10-20 seconds in direct contact with a surface to successfully disinfect an area. | Most antibacterial sprays (and antibacterial hand soaps and gels) require a longer cleaning process or dwell time in order to be effective against 99.9% or more bacteria. |
The amount of time that a disinfectant can claim to last will vary depending on the brand you’re using and its ingredients. Steroclenz Rapid maintains a clean area for up to four hours if used correctly. | Antibacterial products usually need to be reapplied more regularly than disinfectants to be effective in continuing to protect against bacterial growth and spread. |
Disinfectant sprays eliminate germs and bacteria, but most don’t contain detergents or cleaners. This means users may require additional sanitising products to remove dirt or residues in the area being cleaned. | Antibacterial kill bacteria, but not other pathogens. If you want to remove harmful germs such as viruses, spores, or fungi, users will need to use a sanitising or disinfectant product as well as antibacterial products. |
