How to use the Medium Concentration Oxygen Mask
- Attach Tubing: Connect one end of the oxygen tubing to the spigot on the mask. Attach the other end to the oxygen flow meter.
- Set Flow Meter: Adjust the flow meter to deliver the prescribed oxygen concentration. It's important to ensure that the flow is at least five litres per minute. This is crucial to wash out carbon dioxide from the mask and prevent re-breathing.
- Fit the Mask: Place the mask over the patient's nose and mouth. Adjust the elastic strap to achieve a secure and comfortable fit. The strap can be placed over the ears or under them, depending on the patient's comfort and to avoid pressure sores.
- Ensure Proper Seal: Check that the mask forms a good seal around the patient’s nose to prevent oxygen from entering the eyes. A poorly fitting mask can cause dry oxygen flow to the eyes, potentially leading to complications like exposure to keratopathy or corneal perforation.
- Monitor Patient: Be cautious about aspiration risks, especially if the patient is at risk of vomiting.
- Additional Monitoring for Conscious Sedation: For patients undergoing conscious sedation, where respiratory depression should be monitored, a monitoring line can be attached to the mask. This line connects to a capnograph through a lure lock connector, allowing for the measurement of end-tidal CO2 levels.
