What is the UK law on lone worker safety?

All businesses are required by law to supply a first aid kit, but you are also required by law to conduct a risk assessment to determine the unique risks of your business operations and how to mitigate them. This risk assessment will determine if you manage lone workers and therefore need a lone worker kit. You will also need to consider:

  • What are the specific threats to the lone worker’s safety, for example, violence or manual handling?
  • Is the worker trained in self-administering first aid? HSE advises that “your risk assessment may indicate that some lone workers may need first aid training (including how to administer first aid to themselves).”
  • How can the worker communicate with you or signal for help if they injure themself alone?

If you don’t provide your staff, contractors, or volunteers with first aid supplies, you could receive a fine or even be prosecuted. Lone workers are often at greater risk of injury than people in teams as they cannot rely on the help of others. Find out how a lone worker first aid kit could save a life.

You should replace items as soon as they've been used. Also, check the expiration dates on all items regularly and replace any expired or soon-to-expire items.

While the kit is designed to be user-friendly, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) does recommend that lone workers have first aid training, including how to administer first aid to themselves.

What's in this kit?

This kit is based on our best-selling HSE First Aid Kit, which was made especially for low-risk businesses to take care of all their first aid needs in one go.
