The 3 Basic Bends
Without any bends, the SAM® Splint is completely malleable, to be shaped however the user desires. When you make a curve or fold anywhere across its longitudinal axis, it becomes rigid and suitable for splinting. With the following 3 bends; C-Curve, Reverse C-Curve and T-Curve, the strength and rigidity allow any bone to splinted appropriately.
C-Curve - Strong
This curve immediately adds strength and rigidity to the splint. It can be done by placing your thumbs in the centre as a place and pulling in the edges to create a shallow C.
Reverse C-Curve - Stronger
Created by firstly making the C-Curve, then bending back both edges in a reverse direction to add additional strength.
T-Curve - Strongest
Fold the splint in half lengthways then bend half of each side back in the opposite direction to create a 'T' shaped beam. Bending the splint this way adds exceptional strength to the splint.
How to use the SAM® Splint 18" Junior Flat
Here’s how to create a wrist splint with the 18" Junior Flat SAM® Splint:
- Begin by rolling one end of the splint to create a rounded edge for comfortable finger placement.
- Shape the splint into a C-curve to mirror the natural contour of the wrist and forearm.
- Ensure the curve is ample around the thumb base for a snug fit and avoid undue pressure.
- For increased rigidity, fold the edge of the splint along the side corresponding to the little finger.
- Position the splint on the patient's wrist.
- Adjust gently to achieve the best fit, avoiding any areas of discomfort.
- Finally, secure the splint in place with your chosen bandage or wrap, ensuring it's firm yet comfortable.
Remember to check the splint regularly for tightness and circulation and adjust as needed to maintain optimal support and comfort.
