Usage Guidelines and Precautions for the Ambu® Mini Perfit ACE Cervical Collar

Purpose and Function

The Ambu® Mini Perfit ACE collar is a medical device designed to immobilise the cervical spine. It helps healthcare professionals maintain neutral alignment and limit movement in all directions—side-to-side, forward-backward, and rotational. This control is essential during patient movement or transport, especially in cases involving potential neck or spinal injuries.

Contraindications

There are specific situations where this collar should not be used. It is not recommended for trauma patients with penetrating injuries or for individuals with ankylosing spondylitis, due to the increased risk of harm in these cases.

Warnings and Cautions

The collar must only be applied by licensed healthcare practitioners under medical direction. Incorrect use can result in permanent injury. It is also intended for single-patient use only, to prevent contamination and infection. Prolonged use beyond 24 hours is not advised, as it may cause pressure ulcers.

How to use the Adult Ambu-Perfit ACE

Important: This procedure requires two people – one to maintain head and neck stabilisation, the other to fit the collar.

  1. Manual Stabilisation: One rescuer holds the patient’s head and neck in a straight (neutral) position. Do not force movement if there’s resistance or pain.
  2. Measure for Sizing: Measure the distance from below the patient’s chin to the top of their shoulder. Compare this with the collar’s sizing line to the base of the plastic section.
  3. Adjust the Collar: The collar is set to Size 3 (Neckless) by default. If a larger size is needed, unlock the safety tabs, adjust the collar, and lock it again. To resize later, unlock the ratchet latches, adjust as needed, then re-lock.
  4. Prepare the Collar: Flip the chin support from the back to the front to form the collar.
  5. Apply the Collar: One rescuer continues to hold the head steady. The second slides the back of the collar behind the neck (if lying down), places the front under the chin, and fastens the velcro.

Keep the head and neck aligned throughout. Do not release the head after applying the collar – provide full immobilisation before moving the patient.
