What is the Adult Ambu-Perfit ACE?

The Ambu® Mini Perfit ACE collar is a crucial medical device designed for immobilising the cervical spine. Its primary purpose is to assist healthcare practitioners in maintaining neutral alignment and preventing lateral sway and anterior-posterior flexion and extension of the cervical spine. This is essential during patient transport or movement, particularly in cases of neck or spinal injuries.

However, it's important to note certain contraindications and warnings. The use of this collar is not recommended in trauma patients with penetrating injuries or those suffering from ankylosing spondylitis due to the potential risks involved.

Additionally, there are critical cautions to be aware of:

  • The collar should only be applied by licensed healthcare practitioners as directed by a physician or medical authority. Improper use can lead to permanent injury.
  • It is intended for single-patient use and should not be reused on another patient to prevent the risk of contamination and subsequent infections.
  • Extended use of the collar, beyond 24 hours, is not advised as it may lead to the development of pressure ulcers.

How to use the Adult Ambu-Perfit ACE

Using the Ambu® Perfit ACE collar involves a series of steps to ensure proper immobilisation of the cervical spine while maintaining patient safety and comfort.

Step 1: Manual Stabilisation: Have a rescuer manually stabilise the patient’s head and neck in a neutral alignment position, being cautious of any resistance or discomfort.

Step 2: Apply the Collar: Another rescuer should then apply the Ambu Perfit ACE collar, ensuring it does not hyperextend the patient's neck.

Step 3: Measure: Measure the distance from below the patient’s chin to the top of their shoulder.

Step 4: Compare: Compare this measurement with the distance from the collar's sizing line to the lower aspect of the plastic collar body.

Step 5: Sizing the Collar: The collar is preset to Neckless Size 3. If a larger size is needed, disengage the safety locks and adjust the collar to the appropriate size.

Step 6: Adjust and Lock: Adjust the collar and engage the safety locks once the correct size is achieved.

Step 7: Resizing if Needed: To resize, disengage the safety locks and adjust the ratchet latches. Then, reset the latches and engage the safety locks.

Collar Assembly:

  • Flip the chin piece from the back to the front of the collar to form it for application.

Application:

  • Two individuals are required for application. The first maintains stabilisation of the head and neck, while the second positions and secures the collar.

Supine Application:

  • If the patient is lying down, slide the back portion of the collar behind the neck and then position the front portion under the chin. Attach the velcro while maintaining proper positioning.

Warnings:

  • Maintain neutral head and neck alignment throughout the procedure.
  • Once the collar is applied, do not release the head. Further immobilise the head and neck with additional support and secure the patient for transport.
