How to use the Large Limb Burn Dressing

Initial Response

Stop the Burn: Immediately halt the burning process. This may involve moving the person away from the source, dousing flames with a fire extinguisher, or using a blanket to smother flames. Always ensure personal safety first.

Prepare the Area

Remove Obstructions: Carefully remove any clothing or jewellery near the burn on the limb. Avoid removing items that are stuck to the burnt skin to prevent further harm.

Applying Burnshield Dressing:

  1. Open: Carefully open the sterile foil package containing the Large Limb Burn Dressing.
  2. Remove: Gently take out the Foam Dressing.
  3. Apply: Place the Foam Dressing over the burn on the limb, ensuring it covers the entire affected area for effective treatment.
  4. Secure: Hold the dressing in place with a non-adherent bandage or other suitable material.

Additional Steps:

  • Rehydration (If Needed): Reapply Burnshield Hydrogel to the dressing if more moisture is required for the burn.
  • Pain Management: Manage pain using paracetamol or ibuprofen, following the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid giving aspirin to children under 16 years.
  • Reduce Swelling: Try to keep the burned limb elevated, if possible, to help reduce swelling.

When to Seek Medical Assistance

  • Size and Depth of the Burn: Seek immediate medical care for burns larger than the size of the affected person's hand, or for any deep burns that cause white or charred skin.
  • Location of the Burn: Burns on sensitive or critical areas such as the face, neck, hands, feet, any joints, or genitals require immediate medical evaluation.
  • Type of Burn: All chemical and electrical burns warrant an urgent visit to the A&E.
  • Accompanying Injuries: If there are additional injuries that need treatment, it's important to visit A&E.
  • Signs of Shock: Symptoms like cold, clammy skin, sweating, rapid, shallow breathing, and feelings of weakness or dizziness indicate a need for emergency care.
  • Age and Health Factors: Children under the age of 10, individuals with chronic health conditions (like heart, lung, or liver disease, or diabetes), or those with weakened immune systems (due to conditions like HIV/AIDS or chemotherapy for cancer) should receive medical attention for burns.
  • Inhalation of Smoke or Fumes: If someone has inhaled smoke or fumes, especially showing symptoms like coughing, a sore throat, difficulty breathing, singed nasal hair, or facial burns, they should go to the hospital.
  • Delayed Symptoms: Be aware of delayed symptoms post-burn and seek medical attention if they arise.
  • Intentional Injury: If the injury was intentional or if there is suspicion of intentional harm to someone else, it's imperative to visit A&E.
