What is the Burnshield Limb/ Neck used for?
- Application to Limbs and Neck: Specifically designed for wrapping around arms, legs, and the neck to provide full coverage of burns in these areas.
- Use on All Burn Types: Suitable for burns caused by heat, scalds, sunburn, or chemical exposure.
- Management of Larger Surface Burns: The 5cm x 1m size is ideal for covering longer or circumferential burns on limbs and the neck.
- Safe for Children and Adults: Non-toxic and non-irritant, making it appropriate for use across all age groups.
- Comprehensive Burn Care: Can be applied to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree burns, including scalds and facial burns, offering immediate protection and cooling.
- Emergency First Aid Use: Designed for rapid application during the emergency phase of a burn injury, when quick cooling and protection are vital.
Initial Response: Immediately stop the burning process. This could involve moving the person away from the hazard, extinguishing flames with a fire extinguisher, or smothering flames with a blanket. Remember to avoid putting yourself at risk.
Prepare the Area: Carefully remove any clothing or jewellery near the burnt skin. However, do not attempt to remove items that are adhered to the burnt skin, as this could worsen the injury.
Applying Burnshield Dressing:
- Tear open the sterile foil pouch.
- Remove the gel-soaked foam dressing.
- Gently wrap it around the arm, leg, or neck. Do not secure it too tightly.
- Cover with a non-adherent bandage to hold it in place.
- Seek medical attention if the burn is severe, covers a large area, or involves the face.
Rehydration (if needed): If the dressing requires rehydration, apply Burnshield Hydrogel for added moisture.
Reduce Swelling: Where possible, elevate the affected area to help minimise swelling.
- Flush affected area with water for 15-20 minutes to neutralise acid/alkaline.
- Additional flushing of area if the eyes are involved ( extra 3-5 minutes)
- Apply Burnshield dressing to the affected area and treat as you would for normal heat burns.
- See medical attention.
- For Hydroflouric acid burns – Calcium gluconate neutralizes the burn and then you would use the above protocol.
- Switch off the power source and remove patient from the source
- Look for both entry and exit points of the arc/flash
- Treat as you would for heat burns (see instructions)

- Location of the Burn: Burns on sensitive or critical areas such as the face, neck, hands, feet, any joints, or genitals require immediate medical evaluation.
- Type of Burn: All chemical and electrical burns warrant an urgent visit to the A&E.
- Accompanying Injuries: If there are additional injuries that need treatment, it's important to visit A&E.
- Signs of Shock: Symptoms like cold, clammy skin, sweating, rapid, shallow breathing, and feelings of weakness or dizziness indicate a need for emergency care.
- Age and Health Factors: Children under the age of 10, individuals with chronic health conditions (like heart, lung, or liver disease, or diabetes), or those with weakened immune systems (due to conditions like HIV/AIDS or chemotherapy for cancer) should receive medical attention for burns.
- Inhalation of Smoke or Fumes: If someone has inhaled smoke or fumes, especially showing symptoms like coughing, a sore throat, difficulty breathing, singed nasal hair, or facial burns, they should go to the hospital.
- Delayed Symptoms: Be aware of delayed symptoms post-burn and seek medical attention if they arise.
- Intentional Injury: If the injury was intentional or if there is suspicion of intentional harm to someone else, it's imperative to visit A&E.
