How to use the Braun ThermoScan 3 Ear Thermometer
Prepare the Thermometer
Attach a new, clean disposable lens filter by snapping it into place. This helps maintain accuracy and prevents cross-contamination.
Turn on the Device
Press the start button. The thermometer is ready for use when you hear two beeps and see a non-flashing ear icon on the display.
Take the Temperature
- Position the probe snugly in the ear canal.
- Press the start button to begin measurement.
- The thermometer will beep once for a normal temperature, twice for an elevated reading (37.5°C or higher), and four times for a high temperature (38.6°C or higher).
- The temperature will be displayed on the digital screen.
- Remove and Dispose of the Lens Filter
- After each use, gently pull off the disposable lens filter and discard it.
Automatic Shut-Off
The thermometer will turn off automatically after 60 seconds of inactivity to preserve battery life.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Always use a new, genuine Braun lens filter to maintain accuracy and hygiene.
- Take the temperature in the same ear each time, as readings may vary between ears.
- Ensure the ear is free from wax build-up or obstructions before measuring.
- Avoid taking a reading immediately after exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures—wait at least 20 minutes.
- If using ear drops or medication in one ear, take the reading in the untreated ear.
- The ambient temperature may be outside the operating range (10–40°C). Allow the thermometer to adjust to room temperature for 30 minutes before use.
- Ensure the probe tip is clean and a fresh lens filter is attached.
- Check that the thermometer is correctly positioned in the ear.
A system error may have occurred. Try removing and reinserting the battery, waiting one minute before switching the device back on.
- Ensure the thermometer is off.
- Press and hold the start button for about three seconds.
- The display will show either "C" or "F".
- Continue holding the button to toggle between the two settings.
- Release the button when your preferred setting is displayed.
- The battery compartment is designed with a child-safe mechanism.
- Use a pointed object (e.g., a pen or paperclip) to press into the small hole above the battery door while sliding the cover back.
- Replace with one 3V lithium battery and securely close the compartment.
The Braun ThermoScan® 3 does not have a memory storage feature for past readings.
- Keep in a dry, dust-free location, away from direct sunlight and temperature extremes (-25°C to 55°C).
- Store with the protective cap in place to prevent lens damage.
- Allow the thermometer to adjust to room temperature before use if it has been stored in a colder or warmer environment.
- Always attach a new, clean lens filter before each use to ensure accuracy.
- Push the thermometer probe into the filter inside the box, then pull it out.
- After taking a measurement, remove and discard the used lens filter.
- The thermometer will not work without a lens filter attached.
