Scientifically proven to provide what it takes to stabilise pelvic fractures

The Medium SAM® Pelvic Sling II is crafted to offer a reliable and safe means of stabilising pelvic fractures in medium-sized adults. The design, backed by extensive research and clinical testing by Legacy Health System, ensures precise force application to securely manage unstable pelvic fractures.

This medium version, like its large counterpart, is distinguished by its patented Autostop buckle. This feature is essential in high-stress emergency situations, preventing the risk of over-tightening. The buckle automatically stops when the correct level of compression is reached, thus preventing any additional injury from excessive force.

Endorsed by trauma surgeons worldwide, the Medium SAM® Pelvic Sling II plays a critical role in the first hour following serious trauma. Given the high risk of severe haemorrhage from pelvic fractures, its rapid application and effectiveness make it a staple in standard first aid procedures.

This medium-sized sling is built with an easy-to-use, hardware-free design. It is tailored to fit a significant portion of the adult population without adjustments, with its application process taking less than a minute. The sling provides clear auditory and tactile feedback for correct placement.

Its robustness is a key feature, designed to withstand harsh conditions, moisture, and exposure to hard or sharp objects. The Medium SAM® Pelvic Sling II is also radiolucent, MRI safe, and can be easily cleaned for reuse, making it a versatile and essential tool in any emergency medical toolkit.

12 Reasons to Choose the SAM® Pelvic Sling II

  • Optimal Force Control: The Medium SAM® Pelvic Sling II includes a force-controlled circumferential pelvic belt uniquely designed for the effective and safe management of open-book pelvic ring fractures.
  • Advanced Autostop Buckle: Features a patented mechanism that prevents over- and under-tightening. The buckle clicks when the correct compressive force is reached, indicating proper application, and is secured with a hook and loop system strap.
  • Ease of Patient Transfer: Comes with a low friction slider, aiding in the smooth and safe transfer of patients.
  • Durable, Non-Stretch Fabric: Constructed from robust, non-elastic fabric, the sling is easy to clean and suitable for repeated use.
  • Radiolucent Material: The material of the sling allows for X-rays and CT scans to be performed without the need for removal.
  • Quick and Simple Application: Designed for ease of use – simply insert the belt through the buckle, pull the strap, and secure.
  • Audible Application Feedback: Provides a clear “click” sound as feedback, confirming the correct application of the required force.
  • Comfort-Oriented Design: The sling's front is tapered, enhancing comfort over the abdomen.
  • MRI Compatibility: MR Conditional, suitable for use with patients in MR systems up to 3.0 T.
  • Latex-Free: Safe for patients with latex sensitivities.
  • No Need for Size Adjustments: Available in multiple sizes, thus eliminating the need for cutting or trimming to fit.
  • Reusable and Easily Cleaned: Can be conveniently cleaned for reuse with standard detergents or antimicrobial solutions.

What is the SAM® Pelvic Sling II used for?

The Medium SAM® Pelvic Sling II is specifically designed for the stabilisation of pelvic fractures in medium-sized adults, a critical intervention in the initial "golden hour" following severe trauma. This pelvic binder compresses the pelvic region, promoting the clotting of blood within the pelvic cavity and thereby reducing the risk of further bleeding. Its application is a crucial part of first aid protocols, especially in cases of traumatic injuries with a high risk of haemorrhage.

The sling's unique feature is its calibrated force application, crucial for stabilising various types of pelvic fractures. In emergency situations, where the specific nature of the pelvic fracture may be unclear, the Medium SAM® Pelvic Sling II ensures that neither too little nor too much force is applied. Applying insufficient force might fail to stabilise the fracture, whereas excessive force could risk further injury to the pelvic ring. As the only pelvic binder designed to exert the correct force for different pelvic fracture types, it is an indispensable tool in trauma care.

The Medium SAM® Pelvic Sling II is specifically tailored for medium-sized adults and is not suitable for use on children.

How to use the SAM® Pelvic Sling

Positioning the Binder: Place the SAM Pelvic Sling II over the upper femurs, precisely covering the greater trochanters. This is the ideal position for reducing diastasis symphysis pubis. Confirm the effective placement of the binder through a CT scan.

Applying Optimal Force: Achieve the required 150N of circumferential pressure. This force extends prongs from the AUTOSTOP Buckle through the Precision Strap, indicating the correct application.

MRI Compatibility: The SAM Pelvic Sling II is MR Conditional. It can be safely used in an MR system under the following conditions:

  • Static magnetic field of 1.5 T and 3.0 T.
  • Maximum spatial field gradient of 10,000 gauss/cm or less.
  • Maximum whole body averaged SAR of 4 W/kg for 15 minutes in Normal Operating Mode.
  • Under these conditions, the maximum temperature rise is less than 2.0° C (3.6° F) in a 1.5 T and 2.5° C (4.5° F) in 3.0 T MRI environment.

Tension Adjustment: Gently and symmetrically pull to increase sling tension and effectively reduce the pelvis. The low-friction posterior slider assists in patient transfers.

Fastening the Sling: Insert the belt through the buckle, pull the strap, and secure it. The sling features Velcro for quick and easy fastening.

Audible and Tactile Feedback: The SAM® AUTOSTOP Buckle provides a tactile and audible “click” to confirm proper application and to prevent over-tightening while maintaining optimal force.

Design Features:

  • The front of the Sling is narrow and tapered, facilitating urinary catheterisation, interventional radiology, external fixation, and abdominal surgery without removal.
  • The fabric does not stretch and can be cleaned for reuse with standard detergents or antimicrobial solutions.
  • The sling is radiolucent, allowing for X-rays and CT scans without removal.

Quality Assurance: Each sling undergoes rigorous testing to ensure the highest quality.
