What is a Laerdal Stifneck Collar used for?
The Paediatric Laerdal Stifneck Select Collar is specifically designed to offer vital support to the cervical spine, maintaining it in a neutral position. This is particularly crucial during patient transportation, ensuring safety and stability. Its primary uses and features include:
- Spinal Cord Injury Management: In cases where a spinal cord injury is suspected, the collar provides essential neck immobilisation. This is a critical component of total immobilisation to prevent any movement of the spinal column that could exacerbate injuries.
- Comprehensive Immobilization Support: The collar is intended to be used in tandem with other cervical and full-body immobilisation devices (CSIDs and FBSIDs). This compatibility ensures a holistic approach to patient immobilisation, offering enhanced support and safety.
- Emergency Medical Procedures: Its design includes an oversized trachea hole, facilitating easy access for essential medical procedures. These include pulse checks, advanced airway management, and visual assessments which are all integral in emergency medical care.
How to use the Laerdal Stifneck Collar
User Instructions:
- Measuring the Patient: In a neutral head position (eyes forward), measure the patient from the shoulder to the chin. Ensure the head is aligned neutrally unless local protocol indicates otherwise.
- Selecting the Correct Size: Use the collar's sizing guide to match the patient's measurement (from the plastic edge to the size window). The Select model has four positions, and the Pedi-Select has three.
- Adjusting the Collar: Set the collar and chin support to the size chosen in step 2.
- Locking the Collar: Secure both sides of the collar by pressing the two lock tabs.
- Preparing the Collar: Preform the collar to ready it for application.
- Applying the Collar: Maintain the patient's neutral head position manually. Place the chin support under the chin. If a different size is needed, remove the collar, resize it, and reapply. Ensure a snug fit around the neck by pulling the collar and fastening it while holding the front in place.
- Supine Patient Application: For patients lying on their back, slide the rear panel of the collar behind the neck before positioning the chin support.
- Cannula Hooks: The collar is equipped with hooks for attaching supplemental oxygen lines.
