What are Burnshield Emergency Contour Dressings Used for?
- Extensive Burn Areas: Perfectly suited for covering and treating large burns, providing ample coverage for extensive wounds.
- All Burn Degrees: Effectively manages 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-degree burns, offering comprehensive treatment for serious burn injuries.
- Scalds from Liquids or Steam: Ideal for burns caused by exposure to hot liquids or steam, covering a large affected area.
- Fire Exposure: Provides essential treatment for injuries resulting from direct contact with fire, particularly over wide skin surfaces.
- Thermal and Electrical Burns: Suitable for burns resulting from both thermal and electrical sources, particularly over large body areas.
- Chemical Exposure: Effective in minimising skin damage following exposure to some harmful chemicals over broad areas.
- Immediate Action: Firstly, halt the burning process. This may involve moving away from the hazard, extinguishing flames with a fire extinguisher, or smothering the flames using a blanket. Always ensure your own safety first.
- Assessment by a Professional: Ideally, a qualified first aider or medical professional should attend to the burn. If this is not possible, refer to the instructions provided on the dressing's packaging.
- Prepare the Wound Area: Remove any restrictive items like jewellery or clothing from around the burn. Avoid removing anything that is adhered to the wound.
- Wound Care: Do not disturb the wound or burst any blisters.
- Dressing Application: Open the foil package and take out the Burnshield dressing. Carefully place it over the burn, ensuring the hydrogel fully covers and extends beyond the burn area.
- Securing the Dressing: Use protective bandages to hold the dressing in place. For large areas, multiple bandages may be required.
- Maintaining Moisture: If available, keep applying Burnshield Hydrogel to the dressing. The dressing can remain in place for up to 24 hours under medical/ professional supervision.
- Seek Medical Advice: For large or deep burns, seek urgent medical assistance and monitor for signs of shock.
- Rehydration of Dressing: Reapply Burnshield Hydrogel as needed to maintain moisture.
- Flush affected area with water for 15-20 minutes to neutralise acid/alkaline.
- Additional flushing of area if the eyes are involved ( extra 3-5 minutes)
- Apply Burnshield dressing to the affected area and treat as you would for normal heat burns.
- See medical attention.
- For Hydroflouric acid burns – Calcium gluconate neutralizes the burn and then you would use the above protocol.
- Switch off the power source and remove patient from the source
- Look for both entry and exit points of the arc/flash
- Treat as you would for heat burns (see instructions)

- Age and Health Factors: Children under the age of 10, individuals with chronic health conditions (like heart, lung, or liver disease, or diabetes), or those with weakened immune systems (due to conditions like HIV/AIDS or chemotherapy for cancer) should receive medical attention for burns.
- Inhalation of Smoke or Fumes: If someone has inhaled smoke or fumes, especially showing symptoms like coughing, a sore throat, difficulty breathing, singed nasal hair, or facial burns, they should go to the hospital.
- Delayed Symptoms: Be aware of delayed symptoms post-burn and seek medical attention if they arise.
- Intentional Injury: If the injury was intentional or if there is suspicion of intentional harm to someone else, it's imperative to visit A&E.
