An innovative take on a classic design for breakthrough airway management.

Our One-Piece Guedel Airway provides respiratory safety. An innovative product that signifies the first major advancement in guedel airway design in over three decades. Made using the latest in manufacturing technology. It combines two materials into a single moulding, eliminating the traditional separate bite block and its associated risks.

This latex free, sterile airway is designed to enhance patient safety by preventing the dangers of loose or detached bite blocks - issues that have prompted multiple hazard notices historically. Suitable for a wide age range, from neonates to large adults, and individually packaged, this product is an essential tool for resuscitation and challenging intubations. It ensures ease of insertion while minimising the risk of patient trauma, thanks to its soft tip. Our One-Piece Guedel Airway is not just a safer choice—it's a breakthrough in patient care.

What are Guedel Airways used for?

The Guedel Airway, commonly referred to as an oropharyngeal airway, is a critical device for airway management. It's designed to prevent the tongue from obstructing the airway, which is vital for patients who are unconscious or have limited control over airway reflexes. Here are the key uses:

  • Airway Obstruction: It's deployed to prevent the tongue from blocking the epiglottis, which is essential for patients with a diminished Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)
  • Resuscitation: This airway is integral to ensure a clear airway during resuscitation efforts.
  • Anaesthesia: Utilised to maintain an unobstructed oropharyngeal airway in patients under general anaesthesia, both throughout the procedure and in recovery.
  • Ventilation Support: It can be used in conjunction with oxygen masks or bag-mask ventilation to secure a clear passage for oxygen.

How to use Guedel Airways

  1. Preparation: First, confirm the patient's mouth is clear of any foreign objects.
  2. Lubrication: Apply lubricant to the oropharyngeal airway to facilitate a smooth entry.
  3. Selection of Size: Measure from the patient's first incisors to the angle of their jaw to determine the appropriate size of the airway.
  4. Insertion: Gently insert the airway with the tip pointing upwards towards the roof of the mouth to avoid depressing the tongue and causing an obstruction.
  5. Rotation: Once the tip reaches the back of the throat, rotate it 180 degrees to secure the tongue and complete insertion.
  6. Positioning: The airway should be advanced until the flange rests outside the patient's lips. Be careful not to pinch the lips between the airway and the teeth.
  7. Patient Response: Watch for a gag reflex. If the patient can't tolerate the airway, cease insertion and consider an alternative, like a nasopharyngeal airway.

Where to use Guedel Airways

  • Emergency Situations: It's essential for rapid response scenarios where quick and efficient airway management is critical.
  • Emergency Medical Services (EMS): Used by paramedics and emergency responders when facing potential airway obstruction in unconscious patients.
  • General Anaesthesia: Deployed routinely during surgeries to secure the airway while the patient is under anaesthesia.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): A standard tool in CPR to ensure the airway remains unobstructed for effective ventilation.
  • First Aid: Crucial for first responders to manage an unconscious individual, ensuring the airway is open until further medical support is available.
  • Hospital Settings: Commonly used in pre-hospital emergency care and for short-term airway management post-anaesthesia.
  • Cautionary Use: Should only be used if the patient is unconscious or has minimal responsiveness to avoid the risk of gagging or aspiration. For patients with an intact gag reflex, a nasopharyngeal airway may be preferable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Guedel Airway, also known as an oropharyngeal airway, is a medical device designed to maintain an open airway by preventing the tongue from obstructing the epiglottis in unconscious patients.

The correct size can be determined by measuring from the patient's incisors to the angle of the jaw. Our range includes sizes for neonates to large adults, each colour-coded for easy identification.

Yes, our Guedel Airways are latex-free and phthalate-free, reducing the risk of allergic reactions and ensuring patient safety.

No, for hygiene and safety reasons, the Guedel Airway is designed for single use only and is sterilised with gamma irradiation.

The airway should be lubricated and inserted upside down until the tip reaches the back of the throat, then rotated 180 degrees to secure the tongue and fully inserted until the flange rests at the patient’s lips.

It is used in various medical situations including emergency response, during general anaesthesia, CPR, and in pre-hospital emergency care.

If a gag reflex is present, halt the insertion as the patient may not tolerate the airway and consider using a nasopharyngeal airway instead.

Yes, use it only in unconscious or minimally responsive patients to prevent the risk of gagging or aspiration. Be sure to clear the patient's mouth of any foreign bodies before insertion.

The device should be removed by pulling on it without rotation when the patient regains their swallow reflex or when substituted for an advanced airway.
