Designed for Safe, Controlled Evacuation

The Ferno Saver Safe Evacuation Chair is designed for use in emergencies where individuals need to be safely moved down and out of buildings. It supports safe and efficient evacuation by allowing controlled stair descent without heavy lifting or manual handling.

Compliant with The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and The Equality Act 2010, this chair is intended to be stored on wall brackets at stairwells in multi-storey buildings, ready for immediate use if needed.

Lightweight yet sturdy, the chair features an easy-to-operate design with wide rear kickstand for stability, secure patient restraints, and removable components for straightforward cleaning and maintenance. It is suitable for use in offices, care homes, sports venues, shopping centres and other public or workplace environments where safety procedures must accommodate individuals with limited mobility.

Operator training is essential to ensure the chair is used correctly and safely in real-world situations.

7 Reasons to Choose the Ferno Saver Evacuation Chair

  • Effortless stair descent: The chair glides smoothly down stairs, helping to reduce strain on operators. Training in its use is essential for safe operation.
  • Improved control and comfort: Easy-grip rubber sleeves on both upper and lower handles assist with positioning the chair onto the stairs and offer reliable control throughout use.
  • Enhanced patient security: Includes an adjustable, removable head pad and patient retaining straps to ensure comfort and stability during movement.
  • Stable design: A wide rear kickstand improves balance and prevents tipping, particularly during horizontal movement.
  • Compact and lightweight: Weighing just 11.2kg, the chair is easy to store and handle. It comes complete with a wall bracket, dust cover, and clear user guidance signage.
  • Designed for easy cleaning: The seat cover is removable, with underside zips for straightforward maintenance.
  • Supports lateral transfers: The seat is fixed on three sides and contoured for an optimal seated position, simplifying transfers to other equipment.

Intended Users and Operator Requirements

The Ferno Saver Evacuation Chair is intended for use by trained personnel responsible for safely evacuating individuals during an emergency. It is especially suitable for those with reduced mobility, including:

  • Older people or individuals with physical impairments
  • Pregnant women
  • People recovering from injury or illness
  • Visitors or staff temporarily affected by anxiety, distress or confusion
  • Parents with young children
  • Individuals with unseen conditions such as asthma, heart complaints, or unstable diabetic or epileptic conditions

Use of the chair requires trained operators who can respond calmly in an emergency, assist occupants into the chair, and guide them safely down stairs. It is designed to meet the needs of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Equality Act 2010.

How to Use the Ferno Saver Evacuation Chair

The Ferno Saver Safe Evacuation Chair is intended for use in emergency situations to assist with the safe descent of individuals who are unable to evacuate unaided. It is important that all operators are fully trained and familiar with its use.

Preparing the Chair

  1. Remove the dust cover and lift the chair from the wall bracket.
  2. Unbuckle the restraint strap while keeping the chair folded. Raise the rear handle to its highest position until it locks in place.
  3. Extend the rear wheels by pulling the bar out and upwards until they click into position.
  4. Tilt the chair so it rests on all four wheels.
  5. Pull the seat forward and down into the seating position. The chair is now ready for use.

Securing the Occupant

  1. Tilt the chair forward slightly and help the occupant sit down.
  2. Return the chair to rest on all four wheels.
  3. Secure the occupant using the supplied chest strap, and apply the head support if needed.

Descending Stairs

  1. A minimum of two trained operators is recommended.
  2. Position one operator at the rear and one at the front.
  3. Approach the stairs and tip the chair forward so the weight transfers onto the front bar.
  4. Fold away the rear wheels using the foot-operated axle bar.
  5. Position the chair squarely at the top step and gently move the front wheels over the first step.
  6. Lower the track so it rests on the stair edges and maintain control as you descend, keeping the track in contact with at least two or three steps at all times.
  7. Maintain a firm grip on the handles, alternating grip style if needed for improved control.
  8. Once at the bottom, move the chair clear of the stairs and re-deploy the rear wheels before wheeling the chair away.

Manoeuvring on Landings

  1. Slightly tilt the chair onto the front wheels to turn it smoothly around corners or landings.
  2. Realign the chair before beginning the next descent.

After Use

  1. Return the chair to its storage bracket and cover.
  2. Perform a quick check to ensure it’s clean, damage-free, and ready for the next emergency.

Operators must never exceed the maximum load capacity of 180kg and should always use the provided restraints. Regular training, inspection, and maintenance are essential for safe operation.
