About EpiPen Adrenaline Auto-Injector

EpiPen is an adrenaline auto-injector for emergency use in severe allergic reactions, including reactions to foods, insect stings or bites, medicines and other triggers. It is designed for people with a known history of anaphylaxis or a recognised risk of a serious allergic reaction.

Each auto-injector contains a single pre-measured dose of adrenaline in a sterile solution for injection into the outer thigh. The adult EpiPen delivers 0.3mg of adrenaline, while EpiPen Junior delivers 0.15mg. The device is pre-filled and ready to use, so it can be administered quickly by the person affected or by someone nearby.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis can come on within minutes and may include swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, breathing difficulties, wheezing, dizziness, flushing, rash, stomach cramps, nausea or loss of consciousness. EpiPen is intended for immediate emergency use at the first signs of a severe allergic reaction, followed by urgent medical attention. Because further treatment may be needed, patients are usually advised to carry two auto-injectors at all times.

Who EpiPen Is Intended For

This product is for people with a history of, or recognised risk of, severe allergic reactions that may lead to anaphylaxis. It is intended for emergency use following exposure to triggers such as insect stings or bites, foods, medicines, or other allergens. In some cases, the cause of the reaction may be unknown or linked to exercise.

The correct strength depends on body weight and the advice of a prescriber. EpiPen 0.3mg is generally used for adults and children over 25kg, while EpiPen Jr 0.15mg is generally used for children between 7.5kg and 25kg. Use in children under 7.5kg is not usually recommended unless advised by a medical professional in a life-threatening situation.

It may be suitable for self-administration or for use by a parent, carer, teacher, or another responsible adult assisting someone at risk of anaphylaxis. Anyone prescribed an EpiPen should know how and when to use it, and it is recommended to carry two auto-injectors at all times in case a second dose is needed before emergency help arrives.

How to Use the EpiPen Adrenaline Auto-Injector

Before use

Frequently Asked Questions

An EpiPen is a pre-filled adrenaline auto-injector for emergency use in severe allergic reactions. It is designed to inject a single dose into the outer thigh.

The main difference is the dose of adrenaline delivered. EpiPen 0.3mg is generally prescribed for adults and children over 25kg, while EpiPen Junior 0.15mg may be prescribed for children between 7.5kg and 25kg, as advised by a healthcare professional.

EpiPen is used in emergencies when the first signs of a severe allergic reaction appear. This may be linked to foods, insect stings or bites, medicines, exercise, or other allergens.

It should be used as soon as symptoms of anaphylaxis are recognised. These can develop quickly and may include swelling, breathing difficulty, wheezing, rash, dizziness, stomach cramps or collapse.

Store below 25°C and keep it in the outer carton to protect it from light. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children.
