Hand gel guide

Our range of antibacterial hand gels effectively kills germs and prevents the spread of infections and diseases. Our very own Sterosan Hand Sanitiser, available in 50ml and 500ml, can kill up to 99.999% of germs, and the WaterJel Hand Sanitiser can kill up to 99.9% of germs and are available to buy in bulk.

What is the difference between a hand sanitiser being 99% effective against germs vs. 99.999% effective against germs?

A surface with 1,000,000 bacteria, treated with a product that kills 99.0% of bacteria would still have 1000 bacteria remaining. If the surface were treated with a product that kills 99.999% of bacteria, only 10 would remain.

Our Sterosan Hand Sanitiser is scientifically tested to be 99.999% effective against germs.

10 times more effective than a product that is only 99.99% effective
100 times more effective than a product that is only 99.9% effective
1,000 times more effective than a product that is only 99% effective
10,000 times more effective than a product that is only 90% effective

How much alcohol should there be in hand sanitisers?

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends using hand sanitisers that contain at least 60% of ethanol (or ethyl) or at least 70% isopropyl (or isopropanol) alcohol. This is because alcohol destroys disease-causing pathogens by breaking apart proteins, splitting them into pieces, or messing with a cell's metabolism. Our Sterosan Hand Sanitiser contains 70% ethanol, and the WaterJel hand Sanitiser contains 62% ethanol.

The main ingredient in many hand sanitisers is alcohol, combined with emollients and water - these added elements give the skin moisture to improve penetration of the active ingredient. Our guide to choosing the right hand sanitiser explains more about how emollients contribute to achieving the desired formulation of hand sanitiser.

Does antibacterial hand gel have an expiration date?

The industry standard for when hand sanitisers expire is typically 2-3 years. This indicates the amount of time that the active ingredients in the product have been deemed to be effective for, from testing the product.

Although it is not dangerous to use expired hand sanitiser gel - it is not recommended as it is likely to be less effective than non-expired hand gel. The high alcohol content in the product is likely to evaporate over time, making the percentage of the active ingredient drop to below the minimum of 60% the product needs to contain to work, reducing its effectiveness against bacteria and viruses.

You should check the expiry date on hand sanitiser bottles that may have been in your bag for a while, which is usually on the top of the back of the bottle.

For more information on whether hand gels have an expiration date, read our blog post here:

Does antibacterial hand gel kill viruses?

Alcohol-based hand sanitisers kill many types of viruses by dissolving their fat membranes and killing bacterial spores.

An enveloped virus is one that consists of viral genetic material, coated in a lipid (fatty) layer. Alcohol-based hand sanitisers inactivate the virus by breaking down the lipid layer.

Does it matter which hand gel I use?

Using a good quality hand sanitiser is the only way you can guarantee to protect against germs and viruses that live on the skin of our hands. Although you may be tempted by cheaper alternatives, the low price comes at a high cost to your health and protection against germs.

At Steroplast Healthcare, we care about what goes into our products and provide our customers with only the highest quality, tried, and tested products that meet British Standards. Our hand sanitiser formulas contain 70% alcohol moisturisers and emollients to provide special skin protection.

Even with regular use, our products will ensure that the skin barrier is protected and hydrated, further reducing the risk of infection. Emollients are added to our hand sanitiser formulations to soften the skin with a proactive film that traps moisture - they are often used in products to manage skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
