4 Ways to make your business COVID-19 secure
Hygiene and infection control has never been more important in offices and workplaces. It is vital that everyone knows how to work safely and how to create a COVID-19 secure environment. But what makes a COVID-19 secure workplace? Well, there are guidelines that workplaces are encouraged to stick to in order to keep staff safe whilst at work.
#1 Carry out a COVID-19 risk assessment
A risk assessment of the workplace should be completed, in line with HSE guidance. Once the risk assessment is complete, you should discuss the results with your staff and maybe even place the results on your website.
You could also provide your staff with a record form, on which they can write down what they have done each day to maintain hygiene levels, for example, how many times they sanitised their hands.
As well as this, you could provide your staff with guidelines that are specific to your workplace, which includes whether they should return to work, what to do when travelling to and from work, using hand sanitiser when entering and leaving the workplace, cleaning equipment after use and rules on using communal areas such as the canteen.
#2 Develop cleaning, handwashing and hygiene procedures
You should make sure that the frequency of handwashing and surface cleaning is increased by following these steps:
• Encouraging workers to wash their hands properly, in accordance with the NHS guidance
• Providing hand sanitiser around the workplace.
• Asking staff to frequently clean and disinfect objects and surfaces that are touched regularly for example keyboards and desks. You can look at our disinfectant sprays here
• Providing adequate hand drying facilities such as paper towels or electrical dryers
#3 Encourage people to work from home
If people are able to work from home, you should encourage them to do so. Make sure you discuss home working arrangements with them, ensuring they have the equipment they need to do their job and ensuring they are included in all necessary communications. If you do have staff working from home, it is important that you also look after their physical and mental wellbeing as best as possible.
You can also implement cycle shifts, so that people who work in the same department are in on different days of the week, keeping the number of people in the office at once at a low number.
#4 Create a socially distanced work environment
Social distancing can reduce the chance of spreading or catching Coronavirus. This can be maintained by:
• Putting up signs to remind workers and visitors of social distancing guidance
• Avoid sharing workstations
• Using floor tape or paint to mark areas to help people keep to a 2m distance
• Creating a one-way system in the workplace, if possible
• Use screens or barriers to separate people
• Having split shifts so that too many people aren’t in the workplace at once
