Manchester Titans 2016/2017 what a season!

Hero image

We’re coming close to the end of the Titans 2016/2017 season, and what a season it has been.

Once again they’ve completely outdone themselves, and achieved much more than in previous seasons. They have proved that the Titans are a consistently growing team with success in mind. This desire was something Steroplast had noticed in them when we first met. They had high aspirations and their eyes set on the top, and nothing will prevent them from achieving their goal.

Titans Season

Titans Trophies and Achievements

The Titans were voted the British American Football Association Club of the Year for 2016.

Adult

The Adult contact team topped the Northern Championship Conference, with a 90% win rate! This secured them promotion into the Premier Division, the highest level of American Football attainable in the UK.

Topping the Northern League means the Titans will now play for the National Title on Sunday 27th August against the London Olympians. If you want to cheer them on, this game will take place at 4pm at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds.

Under 19s

Titans under 19s have made their way to the Britbowl Trophy Final, this game will be played on Sunday 20th August at the Titans home ground – The National Speedway Stadium in Manchester.

The team has also pushed harder this year and are now ranked in the top 4 within the UK after winning their division.

Under 17s

The Titans under 17s North completed their inaugural season and are finding their feet in the division.

The South team played in their National Final and completed the season ranked 4th in the UK.

Adult Flag

The Adult flag team dominated their division and reached the quarter finals of the playoffs.

Women

The Titan women also qualified for the National Finals and finished 4th in the UK.

Outstanding performers

Anyone who has played or watched American Football will know that the game is not a game for individuals. It is all about how well you work as a team, Basketball is 5 on 5, Football is 11 on 11, but because of the constant changes American Football can be 30 on 30 right up to 60 on 60. So, to compete at a high level for a full game, every week of a season, you need strength in depth in your defence and offence, and you need all these individuals to work as one unit.

This is exactly why the Titans shine, if you go to the Speedway Stadium and watch a game, you will see the strong camaraderie and bond they have. They are coordinated and organised, with every player on the field being involved in every single play.

However, we still want to mention a few of the players that really shined this season:

James Newnse

James has become a star player for the Titans and is a product of their youth scheme. He first started with the Titans in their under 19’s team. James has managed to score the most touchdowns this season. Which means, he has worn the NXT belt the most this season!

Sam Bloomfield

Sam’s performance this season really does deserve a mention. Sam is the Titan’s quarterback and captain. He has thrown passes for 35 touchdowns this season. We’re expecting a few more from Sam in the Final.

Defensive Backs

The second level of defence has had a great season. With a total of 17 interceptions, led by Dave Barnett, and this even included one from Mr James Dean in the Leicester Falcons playoff game; Does anyone have a photo of this?

Lee Horrocks

Lee has been the player that opposing teams have wanted to avoid. He has a good nose for the ball in the backfield and he shuts down other teams runs, in fact he has led the Titans with the most tackles over the season.

Next Season

This season has been so successful, you could think that the Titans would rest on their laurels, however, you’d be wrong, they are already getting ready for the 2017/18 season.

The taster /recruiting sessions for the women’s team begin in September. If you would like to have a try out and see what American Football is all about click here for details.

If you’re interested in getting involved in the men’s and youth tasters, keep your eye on the Titan’s website and go along. We could see you next season!
