Steroplast sponsors Greater Manchester Sports Awards

For some 20 years now, Steroplast Healthcare has worked closely with sports clubs in the Greater Manchester area. Providing supplies and equipment to their physiotherapy teams. And, recently, the company decided to sponsor the region’s ‘Club of the Year’ award. So it’s perhaps unsurprising that several Steroplast representatives were among the guests at Greater Manchester’s eighteenth annual sports awards. An event which celebrates the achievements of the region’s unsung sporting heroes.

In fact, there were more than 500 guests at The Point, Emirates Old Trafford, including Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester. And it was the Mayor who kicked the evening off. With a stirring keynote speech that stressed the importance of sport in giving young people a positive start in life. He then went on to name the winner of the first-ever GM Mayor’s Award. The GMACFL (Greater Manchester Ability Counts Football League), a competition for disabled participants and teams across the region.

But this was far from the end of the evening. Indeed, there were eight more awards, all presented by BBC Radio Manchester’s breakfast presenter Chelsea Norris. And every winner had a truly inspiring story to tell. Ranging from an ex-police officer who had been left blind in one eye, to ‘100-year old Gladys’ who – despite her age – is still active and has recently acquired a gym membership!

A very moving night

Whilst the audience heard many moving tales of fortitude, none were more poignant than that of Claire Lomas. Left paralysed from the chest down, after a horse riding accident in 2007. Claire admitted that there had been times that she “wished she’d hit the tree harder”. Now, though, 11 years later – a period which includes a 400-mile hand-cycle around England, multiple marathons and a lighting of the 2012 Paralympic cauldron – Claire has climbed from her “dark place” to rekindle her love for sport. Raising £600,000 to support the search for a cure for paralysis in the process!

Club of the Year 2018

For the final presentation of the evening, Steroplast Healthcare’s Janice Watson (Market Development Manager) and Paul Smith (Marketing Executive) took the stage to announce the winner of the ‘Club of the Year’ award. Dom Doyle FC, formed in memory of Dominic Doyle, the club works to keep young people out of trouble by offering them the opportunity to be involved with football. And it has had considerable success, not just with its youth-crime reducing aims, but on the pitch, too – Dom Doyle FC won the Tameside Football League Cup in both 2017 and 2018, then capped this admirable achievement by lifting the Lancashire & Cheshire Football League Cup a few months later.
