Steroplast are very happy to announce that we’ll be joined at this year’s Emergency Services Show by Dave Ward. Having worked in the Fire Service for many years he has a great knowledge of the emergency services.
Working closely with Steroplast over the last two years we’ve developed a great relationship. He’s been able to have hands on experience with our products. We’re excited to have Dave join us, allowing exhibition visitors to chat with him about his experience in the fire service. Getting his views on the products we will be exhibiting.
Dave Ward spent 32 years in the fire service and loved every minute of it. He was situated at the London Road and Thompson Street fire stations in Manchester City Centre. Serving as Leading Fireman, later becoming Borough Trainer at the Training Centre. Eventually retiring in 2012 as Watch Manager at the Training Centre.
He was involved in many emergency situations during his time in the service:
Manchester Woolworth Fire
This was his first major fire, and it took place on May 6th 1979. This was the city’s worst fire since World War II, due to damaged electrical cable igniting polyurethane foam furniture. Large amounts of thick toxic smoke were produced, the smoke was so thick the 500 staff and customers trapped inside could not find their way out. The store had no sprinkler system and so it was only when the fire service arrived that flames began to be extinguished. Also the stores windows had thick iron bars on them that couldn’t be moved without specialist equipment.
British Airtours Flight 28M Disaster
Dave was also on duty at Manchester Airport on the 22nd August 1985 during this terrible disaster. The accident saw 55 people die when a 737 burst into flames during taking off. This terrible incident led to huge changes in air travel.
Through a keen interest in the First Aid side of his profession, he was involved in the inception of Trauma Care in Greater Manchester Fire. He also co-wrote on the Fire Fighter Manual of Trauma Care, which was then adopted nationally.
An interest in First Aid and looking after the body saw him move into sports physiotherapy, training to be a sports physio at Stockport College. His studying see’s him now in the role of Head Physio for the England, UK and Greater Manchester Fire Service’s football teams through Firesport UK (FSUK). FSUK encourages all forms of sport to both serving and retired members of the Fire & Rescue Service. Using sport allows former service workers to stay involved in what they love, and use the opportunity to promote safety to local communities. Being so impressed with this initiative we immediately became an official sponsor.
With any free time available, Dave loves to get involved in charitable work within his local community and throughout Manchester. He is currently an Allotment Manager for Mencap which allows him to give advice and green exercise to the service users on a weekly basis. He also works with the voluntary organisation Not Just Soup Kitchen. Helping provide food for homeless people on the streets of Manchester.
Dave Ward and Steroplast
Steroplast’s connection to Dave started via our relationship with professional boxer Charlie Schofield, as Dave was his sports masseur. Once we were introduced and we found out what Dave is all about and his skills and knowledge, we definitely wanted to work with him. Dave now uses Steroplast products during his physio work, giving us his expert opinion and feedback.
If you’d like to come and say hello to Dave, he’ll be with us at Stand J16 throughout the show.
